The cars have undergone their most significant overhaul in a decade: smaller, nimbler chassis, a roughly 50/50 power split between the engine and electrical systems, and the replacement of the traditional DRS with “Active Aerodynamics.” With these technical shifts, safety remains paramount, but the real story is the potential for a complete reshuffle of the grid.
Last season concluded with a thriller that F1 fans will talk about for decades. McLaren’s Lando Norris finally reached the summit, clinching his first Driver’s Trophy by a mere two points over four-time champion Max Verstappen. It was the closest championship battle in history, and it has set the stage for a massive 2026 rivalry involving Red Bull, Ferrari, Mercedes, and a defending McLaren squad that finally looks like the team to beat.
Where Has The Money Gone?
Despite losing his crown, Max Verstappen has been installed as the bookmakers’ favorite for the opener. Max came up less than a second short at Albert Park last year against Norris, and the public clearly expects a “revenge” performance.
However, some of the sharper offshore books are showing a clear lack of confidence in the Red Bull favorite. We’ve seen Max pushed out to as high as +320 at certain shops, with significant professional action hitting Charles Leclerc and George Russell instead. Interestingly, we are also seeing some “legacy” money coming in on Lewis Hamilton, with sharps betting that the 2026 regulations might favor his experience.
Prediction
The fact that Verstappen is being moved this aggressively by the sharpest books gives us serious pause. While Max is never a “bad” bet, the value seems to have evaporated elsewhere.
Charles Leclerc currently looks like the best value on the board at his opening price, but the most eye-catching shift has been on George Russell. After a standout showing in Bahrain testing, Mercedes’ pace looks legitimate. Russell has shortened considerably since the market opened, suggesting that the Silver Arrows may have unlocked the secret to the new 2026 aero package.
